Chapter 14 Taught Me A Great Deal About World Stratification

Chapter 14 taught me a great deal about world stratification and how the world system perspective works on an economic level. In order to understand world stratification we must understand how nationally the world is split up into classes. The three divisions of the stratification system are Core, Periphery and Semi-periphery. These were things I never heard of before, however I understand the divisions more fully now and realize how they tie into the poverty rates around the world. I also thought learning about Japan’s power elite and Germany’s codetermination systems in chapter 15 was surprising and made me see how some of their systems could be beneficial to the Americans and our ever increasing poverty rates. Furthermore, I learned what Purchasing Power Parity is and how $1.00 in other nations compares to U.S. dollars, it put a lot of things into perspective for me in terms of how bad things really could be and are for the poverty stricken. A core nation is one that is the most economically distributed, wealthy and powerful nations in the world stratification system. Our SSI text showed that the United States was included as a core nation, along with places like Japan, Germany, France, Canada and other nations. The core nations have â€Å"generally less income inequality compared with other nations† (pg. 430). Initially, the first phase of conducting our financial feasibility report will include researching the each specific stakeholder and answering the relevant questions aforementioned. The second phase will include researching the potential situational variables and producing possible contingency plans to prevent potential problems resulting from these variables. Competing on Resources: Strategy in the 1990s. Essay In the article, the authors introduce a new approach to strategic management called the Resource Based View of the Firm RVB. RVB attempts to develop a business model framework that helps describe how a companys resources drive its performance in a dynamic competitive environment. This approach integrates the internal analysis of the company (i.e. core competencies) with the external analysis of the industry and the competitive environment (i.e. Porters Five Force Model). The article argues that both analyses are required to accurately assess a companys competitive position. While Porters Five Forces Model helped strategic managers choose the right industries and, within them, the most attractive competitive positions, it did not place a high enough emphasis on a companys core competencies. The emphasis in the model was clearly on the phenomena at the industry level. Likewise, the core competencies approach emphasized the importance both of the skills and collective learning embedded in an organization, but little emphasis was placed on the external environment. From Prahalads article titled The Core Competence of the Corporation, core competencies entail the collective learning in an organization and how diverse production skills and multiple streams of technologies are integrated. Core competence involves communication, involvement and a deep commitment to work across organizational boundaries. He argues that core competence does not diminish with use, unlike physical assets. He also argues that roots of competitive advantage arise from within the organization and that new strategies and improved competitive positioning are only constrained by the current level of the companys resources. Herein lies the key differences in the analyses carried out by Prahalad and Collis. Collis first argues that core competencies cannot be evaluated in isolation, because their value is determined in the context of the present market forces. In order to accurately assess a companys competitive strength, one must analyze a companys specific resources (i.e. ph ysical and intangible assets) and capabilities in the context of the competitive environment. Furthermore, Collis argues that core competencies do erode over time and by competition and that continuous reinvestment is required. The RVB approach views core competencies as the heart of a companys competitive position, subject to the effects of three fundamental market forces: 1) market demand, 2) scarcity and 3) appropriability. RVB translates these general economic requirements into the following five tests:1)Test of inimitability is the resource difficult to copy? Having a resource that competitors can easily copy only generates temporary value creation. If a resource is inimitable, then profits will be more sustainable. However, inimitability does not last forever. Competitors can eventually find ways to copy most valuable resources. Managers can delay the onset of competitors and sustain profits for a while longer by building strategies around resources that have at least one of the following characteristics: 1) physical uniqueness (i.e. patents), 2) path dependency (i.e. resources that are unique because they have been built over time and cannot be purchased, like brand name), 3) causal ambiguity (i.e. competitors does how to recreate the resource, like companys recipe to innovation), 4) economic deterrence (i.e. company preempts a competitor by making a sizable investment in an asset). 2)Test of durability: How quickly a resource depreciates? Current technologies will inevitably be surpassed by the next great innovation. RVB emphasizes that the value of distinctive competence erodes over time and by competition. In a market of continuous change, organizations need to maintain the pressure of constantly developing and reinvesting into the right distinctive competencies, preparing for the next round of competition. However, it is critical that organizations invest in core competencies while at the same time examine the competitive dynamics that determine industry attractiveness. An example cited in the article involves Masco Corporation; a company that built competence in metalworking and diversified into other closely related industries. Unfortunately, the returns from this strategy were lower than what the Masco had expected because the bargaining power of the buyers was high, buyer switching costs were low, entry barriers were low and the bargaining power of suppliers were high. No amount of metalworking expertise could have helped Masco improve profits in such an unattractive industry. RVB takes a larger picture approach to analyzing the competitive position of a company. It adopts the core competencies principle described by Prahalad and adds to it effects of the fundamental market forces that drive industry competition and attractiveness.

The line diagram demonstrated below is well explanatory of facts mentioned above:- For KESCO, As far as indicators of Revenue realization are concerned it has high ATC losses to the tune of 29%(March 2011) .Apart from this, other statistics are also not very encouraging with an average turnout of 65% . There was no end to end tracking of theft checking and raids, revenue assessment and realization therein. Not only that, even for billed but non-paying consumers, there was no accurate record of disconnections done and subsequent action thereon for such consumers. Apart from that many consumers were still having defective /mechanical meters installed at their premises, and thus being billed on average basis. There was no mechanism to have a daily tracking of meter replacement work and advices of meters were taking upto3-4 months. First In this backdrop is a unique , only of its kind in the country, mobile phone based tracking system by the name of M-Drishti introduced in KESCO to ensure end to end tracking of in- field revenue oriented activities: 1. Section 138 Under M-Drishti, 2G internet services have been activated on the official mobile numbers of all distribution officials right from JEs and Assistant Engineers to Chief Engineer. Separate User Id and Passwords have been created for them and they will log in the Mobile M-Drishti interface and fill in details of whatever activities they undertake in field. Similarly for any disconnection done against electricity dues or FIR lodged under section 138 of Electricity Supply Act, the information of action taken on spot has to be submitted then and there for addition in the central database. On the server end once the information is collected, the updation is done by the concerned division. So for raid tracking, once revenue assessment and compounding amount at the field level has been entered, it can be edited and information of final assessment done at division, realization therein, Action taken in terms of issuance of notices under section3 and 5, final amount realized etc, can be done by the concerned division. Similar holds true for disconnections done, amount realized therein, action taken in case of non realization etc. For meter replacement a daily report of meters replaced whether defective/mechanical/otherwise is available and is available for linking with online advice. The software generates various MIS reports whereby day/month /JE/Division wise performance with respect to above four activities can be monitored.

Comparing Poems Salome, Hitcher, On My First Sonne and The Man He Killed The poems, Salome, Hitcher, On My First Sonne and The Man He Killed all have similar themes. The menacing and threatening ideas that the poets used are all based around death. However, each poem has a different perspective on the word with different motives and emotions. The Man He Killed is about a man who talks of the experience he had of shooting someone and the regrets he has for it. He feels guilty, as he has no conceivable explanation for shooting the man. He talks of the similarities he and his foe had such as 'He thought he'd 'list, perhaps, Off hand like - just as I.' The use of hesitation and repetition show the threatening side of the story. It is almost as if he himself is trying to construct an image in his mind as not to make himself look or feel guilty or censurable. The use of colloquialism makes the image even more menacing as we do not understand greatly of this man. Originally, it could be perceived as an old man who regrets his actions in the past. It however, could also be seen as a man who enjoyed killing but must come up with an excuse to the reasons for killing him. 'My foe of course he was, that's clear enough, although.' The poem "Hitcher" has a character that expresses violence in a completely different manner. The poem is a monologue where the speaker casually admits to possibly murdering an innocent hitchhiker. The speaker tells us that he has been taking time off work - faking illness and not answering his phone. Being threatened with the sack, he goes in to work again and gets a lift to his hired car. As he drives out of L... ...he spot. Both of the poems are confusing and surreal as Hitcher is about the idea of jealousness compared to Salome, which is about the idea of hatred. Both The Man He Killed and On My First Sonne are menacing in a different way. They both are about guilt and empathy. The Man he Killed is a dramatic monologue of a man confessing to murder whereas On My First Sonne is an elegy to his Son. In On My First Sonne the man is desperate for the reason why his son was taken and feels pain and rage. When compared to The Man He Killed, he is looking for the reason for why he shot him but feels neither pain nor anger. All the poems show menacing and threatening ideas but are not all based around violence. The poets use technical methods to hide a story. They do this by using repetition of words, hesitations and enjambment.
