“Hunger Games” Movie vs Book
The Hunger Games The Hunger Games is the first novel of The Hunger Games series written by Suzanne Collins in 2008. This novel is written in the first person point of view of the main character, Katniss Everdeen. Throughout the story, Katnissââ¬â¢s opinions are made clear to the audience. This intriguing novel shares Katnissââ¬â¢s struggles and overall victory of the 74th Annual Hunger Games. The Hunger Games story takes place in a post-apocalyptic society. The Capitol is a highly advance city that holds reign over the 12 districts. The Hunger Games is an annual contest hosted by the Capitol in which each district offers one boy and girl chosen by lottery or by choice, if willing. These tributes fight to the death in an arena where they have to fight for weapons and necessities for survival. Prim Everdeen, Katnissââ¬â¢s sister, is chosen by lottery to be tribute for District 12. Without hesitation, Katniss volunteers to be the tribute for District 12. Katniss and Peeta, the b oy tribute from her district, are transported to the Capitol. This is where the audience gets to see the difference between the 12 districts.Katnissââ¬â¢s district, District 12, is the poorest, where many people starve to death; however, District 1 is the wealthiest and donââ¬â¢t face the same challenges as Katniss. The tributes from District 1 and 2 are trained from birth to be tributes in the Hunger Games. These ââ¬Å"Careerâ⬠tributes volunteer themselves to participate in the Hunger Games and believe it is an honor to serve their district. This story leads the audience in further when Peeta confesses his love for Katniss during the interviews held prior to the Games. When the Games begin, Katniss shows her true ability to survive in the wilderness. She uses her knowledge from surviving in District 12 to help her eat and sleep high in the trees. In the beginning of the Hunger Games, Peeta forms an alliance with the Career tributes, while Katniss forms an alliance and f riendship with Rue, the tribute from District 11. After Rue is killed, Katniss is back to surviving the games on her own until the announcer informs the tributes that two contestants can win if they are from the same district. Katniss finds Peeta and nurses him back to health. Finally, the only tributes that are left are Katniss, Peeta, and the Career Tribute from District 1. The tribute is eaten by ââ¬Å"mutationsâ⬠, which nearly killed Katniss and Peeta. However, the tributes from District 12 are not out of the Games, because the announcer tells them that the rules have changed once again and now only one may be victor. When neither Katniss nor Peeta can kill each other, they decide to eat the night lock berries which would kill them immediately. Quickly, the announcer declares that Katniss and Peeta are both the victors of the 74th Annual Hunger Games. The Hunger Games was later turned into a movie in 2012. The book and the movie have several similarities. In both the movie a nd the novel, Katniss volunteers for the Games, saving her sister Prim. Another comparison is the Capitolââ¬â¢s power amongst the 12 districts. The most important similarity is that in both the novel and the movie, Peeta states that he does not want the Games to change him, for he wants to stay true to himself. Katniss does not know how that is possible, until she participates in the Hunger Games. In both the movie and the novel, Peeta does not murder any other tributes during the Games. The novel has some major differences as well. The mockingjay pin that Katniss wears for good luck represents District 12. In the book she receives this gift from the mayorââ¬â¢s daughter, Madge; however, in the movie, Katniss receives this pin from her younger sister, Prim. Another difference is Katnissââ¬â¢s relationship with her ally Rue. In the book, the author emphasizes their relationship and how they work together as a team during the Hunger Games. However, in the movie they keep their relationship short. The last difference occurs at the end of the novel. In the novel the beasts that kill the last tribute are called ââ¬Å"muttations. â⬠There are 9 of these beasts which resemble the fallen tributes. In the movie they are just beastly looking mutated dogs. The Hunger Games is a great book. It shows the differences in social class and has many underlying meanings. The movie was just as good and follows the plot very well. It was a little more futuristic looking than I had imagined from the novel, but still captured the overall theme well.

Cooperate power Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Cooperate power - Essay Example For instance, the recent trade agreement between United States, Panama, Colombia and South Korea allows the member stateââ¬â¢s corporations to treat each other equally. Though World Trade organization and other trade agreements do not fully offer free trade, corporations have furthered their interests through the lowered trade barriers between trading nations. Trade agreements lower trade barriers such as customs duty, excise duty, quotas and import bans which open markets to the corporations. Arguably, this results to increased production as these corporations will focus on what they produce best (Hoekman et al, 2002). Needless to say, lowered trade barriers allow corporations to increase their trading activities, which results to increased incomes. In addition, World Trade Organization and trade agreements reduce the costs of production which may trigger increased profits for the corporations thus furthering their interests. Debatably, the removal of trade barriers increases the level of cheap imports used in production resulting to abridged costs of production. World Trade Organization and other trade agreements offer business protection and incentives. In this regard, corporations use the business incentives, and protection such as defending of logical property rights offered by World Trade organization and other trade agreements (Hoekman et al, 2002). This assists the corporations in attaining and furthering their interests. The recent trade agreement between United States, Panama, Colombia and South Korea protect intellectual property rights and environmental standards allowing the corporations in the different states to further their interests. World Trade Organization and other trading agreements offer enterprises an apparent view of their future opportunities (Hoekman et al, 2002). This is because trade agreements assure member states that the trade barriers will not be raised
Breach of Confidentiality Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Breach of Confidentiality - Essay Example It is intended to make sure that a person in possession of confidential information only uses it for purposes for which it was transmitted to him in the first place. The law of confidence can - as opposed to copyright, which is only concerned with the protection of the form in which information, idea or thought is expressed - protect the content of the information, idea or thought. The main function of the law of confidentiality, or an action for breach of confidence, is the prevention of the illegitimate use of confidential information by a recipient of information. A good conceptual springboard to the understanding of the justification for the protection extended to those items which fall within the ambit of confidence, is the notion that something which people are prepared to pay for must be worth protecting and therefore ought to be protected. However, the courts will only enforce properly identified rights that fall within recognised categories known to law. Some of the items that are protected under the law of confidence are those which do not consist of any specific intellectual property rights under patent, design and copyright or even trade marks law. Traditionally, this has been classified into personal information, governmental secrets and trade secrets. (Catherine Colston and Kirsty Middleton Modern Intellectual Proprty Law 2nd Edition) Obviously, the information, in order to receive the protection of the law, must be confidential. To be such, it must not be something which is public property or knowledge. Therefore, information which is in the public domain cannot be confidential. However confidential the circumstances of communication, there can be no breach of confidence in revealing to others something which is already common knowledge. For example, an employer cannot restrain his ex-employee from revealing a secret process to his new employer if that secret process has already been patented by the employer prior to the revelation by the ex-employee, for it is by then already in the public domain (Mustad v Dosen [1963] RPC 41). All that is required, however, is relative, and not absolute (as in the case of a patent specification, where novelty is required) secrecy. The information must be information the release of which the owner believes would be injurious to him or of advantage to his rivals and others. The owner must believe the information is confidential or secret, i.e. not already in the public domain. The owner's believe must be reasonable. The information must be judged in the light of the usage and practices of the particular industry concerned. On the other hand, it is equally clear that the mere fact of the publication of information does not detract

Comparison Between the Epic of Gilgamesh and Genesis Essay
Comparison Between the Epic of Gilgamesh and Genesis - Essay Example The King lived approximately between 2750 and 2500 BCE. The first half of the story focuses on the friendship between Gilgamesh-king of Uruk and Enkidu. From the Epic, Enkidu is a wild man created by the gods as Gilgameshââ¬â¢s peer to relieve him from oppression caused by the people of Uruk. In a joint mission, the two gentlemen began a journey to the Cedar Mountain where they defeated Humbaba. Humbaba was the monstrous guardian to the Cedar Mountain. This victory called for a celebration and they killed the Bull of Heaven for the celebration. However, this did not go well with goddess Ishtar who sentenced Enkidu to death as a punishment for the actions. The second of half of the Epic highlights how Gilgamesh was distressed at the death of Enkidu and this resulted to him taking a long and perilous journey to discover the secret of eternal life. He later learned that you cannot get everything you are looking for in life. He realized upon creation of man, the gods let death be his share and hence life withheld in their own hands. However, it is worth noting that Gilgamesh fame survived the death of Enkidu because of his account of Siduriââ¬â¢s advice, his great building projects and what he was told about the great flood. GENESIS Genesis is a Greek word that means ââ¬Å"originâ⬠or ââ¬Å"birthâ⬠. It is the first book of the Torah or Pentateuch. Genesis is also the first book of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament. Torah is a Hebrew word for ââ¬Å"instructionsâ⬠while Pentateuch is a Greek word for ââ¬Å"five scrollsâ⬠. In regards to tradition, the Torah was dedicated to Moses by god. However, several scholars are of the opinion that Torah was composed from four different sources between 950 BCE and 500 BCE, which were later joined together around 450 BCE. The book of genesis is structured around ten toledot sections; however, modern commentators see it in terms of a primeval history. The book of Genesis is an example of ââ¬Å"antiquarian historyâ⬠. That is, a type of literature telling of the first appearance of humans, the origins of culture, the stories of ancestors, cities and heroes. Similarities There are several similarities between the epic of Gilgamesh and the book of genesis. One of the similarities lies on the flood account. The first point of similarities was the fact that God chose a righteous man to build an ark because of an impending great flood. In both cases, animals of all kinds were to be on the ark and birds were used after the rains to determine if floods waters had subsidized. After the rains stop stopped, both arks settled on mountain whereby Noahââ¬â¢s Ark and Utnapishtimââ¬â¢s on Ararat and Nisir respectively. It is worth noting that these mountains were not far from each other and sacrifices took the center stage after the flood. Apart from the floods, there was also the similarity in terms of the themes. Apart from the theme of seduction and civilization as r evealed by Eve and Shamhat; the theme of love and friendship and Godââ¬â¢s chosen people also stood out. Themes Love and friendship The greater understanding and great love that emerged between Enkindu and the King; makes King Gilgamesh a better leader to the people of Uruk allowing him to better understand and identify with them. The epic of Gilgamesh may lack a female love interest, but the revelation of erotic love plays a vital role. Love and friendship in the epic is not considered not only as a part of life, but also as a vital part of the poem to

Breast Cancer Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Breast Cancer - Research Paper Example There are many studies and intensive research is underway in order to identify the most important factors that are the reason for the constant increase of the incidence of breast cancer in the last several decades. The results and informationââ¬â¢s from this research should help us reduce the morbidity and mortality from breast cancer and increase the self-awareness of the general population about the risks for this disease. In this study we will conduct a systematic research on the risk and other factors that are the most important factors in the etiology of breast cancer and also we will discuss the challenges of effective screening and treatment of breast cancer. Introduction Breast cancer is malignant neoplasm that is originating from the tissues of the breast. It has significance as one of the most common cancers in the population that almost exclusively affects the female population, however in small percentages this malignancy is present in the male population also (less than 1% of all cases of breast cancer) (Florescu et al. 2011). Breast cancer is the most common type of invasive malignancy that affects women and contributes up to 23% of all invasive cancers that affect female population worldwide. It is registered that in year 2008 13.7% of cancer mortality in the female population in the world was caused by breast cancer or 6% of all cancer mortality worldwide (men and women) was caused by breast cancer (GLOBOCAN 2008). These numbers are alarming and show that breast cancer has severe impact on the global morbidity and mortality especially on the female population. It is also alarming that incidences of breast cancer are constantly increasing dur ing the last three decades and this tendency is maintained till the resent day (Louwman et al 2008). It is believed that this is caused by the modern way of life and the changes that appeared in the habits and diets of modern way of living, changes in the reproductive behavior of the female population and other factors (Dignam et al 2003). This fact can be elaborated more clearly if we understand that the incidence of breast cancer is higher in western, developed countries and in countries that accept western way of lifestyle. For example incidences of breast cancer in population of 100 000 in western Europe is 78, in North America is 90 and these rates are significantly higher when compared to eastern Asia with 18 cases per 100 000 population, in sub-Saharan Africa 22 etc. (Stewart and Kleihues 2003). United States has the highest incidence of breast cancer in the world with 128 new cases of breast cancer on 100 000 women and in United States breast cancer is the second most common cancer after the skin cancer and the second most common cause of cancer mortality after lung cancer (American Cancer Society 2007). As we can see from the above statistics breast cancer has significant effect on the mortality in the population worldwide but especially in the developed countries. 3. Risk factors for breast cancer 3.1. Unchangeable risk factors for breast cancer There are many factors that is believed are the risen for the increase of the incidence of breast cancer in developed countries. In order to understand these factors we will look at the risk factors that are found to be associated with increased incidence of brea

Sociology - group experiment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Sociology - group experiment - Essay Example Immediately almost everyone's attention was turned to us, the pace at which people danced slowed down. Some people looked directly at us and others stared at us through the corner of their eye. 2 couples left the dance floor and the rest continued looking at us either directly or indirectly and were obviously talking about what we were trying to do or our reason for doing this. When the song ended we left the dance floor and nobody approached us later to ask what we were doing. Our basic assumption was that those in the dance floor would expect us to be dancing to the tune of the song being played. Perhaps, they thought, they would have other party goers which they can grind with and show their dance moves. Maybe we were even interested in becoming acquaintances. We assumed that talking and drinking in the dance floor would have the impression of unusualness that would reveal their expectations regarding our assumed behavior. The theoretical and academic framework underlying the breaching experiment is the sociological field of ethnomethodology. It is the study of the way in which people maintain the present social order. It is a contrast to the belief that human behavior is caused by external causal factors or internalized motivations. According to Brinkerhoff, White, Ortega and Weitz (2006), Ethnomethodology stresses that active reason and knowledgeable character of human conduct are the forces that control our social behavior. Harold Garfinkel of the well known musical duo Simon and Garfunkel established a school of ethnomethodology in the 1960, at a time when the structuralism/functionalism was the dominant theory in the field. Garfinkel conducted experiments to prove that the crucial thing governing social exchange were common sense understandings that were unstable and are recreated every day in each social interaction (Bremmer, 2006) .What Garfinkel did was to perform a series of breaching experiments which broke the accepted rules of a social situation. For example, he planned that some students in a group would cheat at tic-tac-toe. According to the structuralists, social order would have broken down, however, the students incorporated the cheating into the rules and continued playing showing that understa ndings are recreated every day (Bremmer, 2006). It is the intent of this student to perform a breaching experiment on his peers in an attempt to observe this phenomenon. This experiment shows that if behavior is not what would be expected and if that behavior would likely impede that goal, friction will arise as was the case in this experiment. In the case of the activity that we conducted, the people dancing in the dance floor seemed not to have a care in the world and were only concerned with the way they and their partners were dancing. My colleagues and I assumed that even though they displayed this unconcerned behavior towards people they don't know or they don't want to get intimate with, they were indeed very sensitive to what is happening around them. We also assumed that these people expected us to be going in the dance floor to dance as if there was an unwritten agreement or contract that everybody understood and complied with. It was common sense to be dancing in the dance floor. According to Bremmer (2006), breaking common sense barriers often lead to bewilderment gradually

Modern Methods Of Construction Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Modern Methods Of Construction - Essay Example Governments encourage the usage of modern methods of construction to boost the safety standards thus comforting the lenders and other stakeholders. The Housing Corporation of UK has stated that at least one-fourth of all new grant-aided construction should be by MMC. (Modern methods of construction (MMC), January 2008) According to the UK Government, by the year 2016, there will be 3 million new households in the country. However to successfully meet this huge growth in demand for houses, the Sustainable Communities Plan suggests a new house-building program using modern methods of construction. This will help not only in meeting the quantity challenge but also help produce better quality houses for the generations to come. (Modern Methods of House Building, December 2003) Implementation of MMC helps improve the quality of housing by making use of more environ friendly and better material, involving high standards of design quality, reducing resource consumption and thus speeding up the process of house delivery. It also helps reduce the time spent on site and overcomes skill shortages if any. Modern Methods of Construction as discussed above are increasingly being adopted by house builders as a source of increasing efficiency and quality of end product. However there are multiple options available to the builders to choose from: Volumetric construction: In this method of construction the entire dwelling is prefabricated offsite in different three-dimensional modular units and then assembled on site. These units may be constructed in many different forms, right from a basic structure to fully finished units. Panelised construction: Even in this method, panalised units are produced offsite and then assembled on site to produce a 3D structure. While open panels consist only of a skeletal framework, the more complex and advanced or closed panels involve more prefabrication typically including lining material and insulation. At times even services, doors, windows, internal and external cladding are also incorporated. Hybrid: This method is also referred to as semi-volumetric as it combines both panalised and volumetric approaches. For constructing highly serviced areas like kitchen and bathroom, the volumetric units are used and for the remaining part of the building panelised units are used. Other modern methods of construction make use of floor or roof cassettes, pre-cast concrete foundation assemblies, pre-formed wiring looms, and mechanical engineering composites. They can also include innovative techniques such as tunnel form or thin-joint block work. (Using Modern Methods Of Construction to Build Homes More Quickly And Efficiently, November 2005) Why use Modern Methods of Construction: Using MMC is all about improved products and processes. The use of MMC in the housing industry help improve business and production efficiency, quality of the houses constructed, enhances customer satisfaction, improves environmental performance, takes care of the sustainability issues and ensures speedy and timely delivery. These methods of construction- be it panelised, volumetric, hybrid or any other method, are broadly based. That is to say they do not focus on a particular aspect of the product. They seek to improve every activity involved in the construction
